4. John FINCH was
born in 1616 in England. If birthdate is correct, his first son was born when
he was only 14, causing doubt to be cast on this date! He died on 5 Sep 1657
in Stamford, CT. John Finch
John Finch was probably a brother of Abraham and Daniel, and arrived in New England
with them in "Winthrop Fleet" of 1630 and settled briefly in Watertown,
MA. The origins in England have never been found. John removed to Connecticut
later. Records of Massachusetts by Shurtliff give the following:
Vol 1, p 120 - "Court holden at Boston Nov. 7, 1732 (1632 ?), John Finch
fined for wanting arms for his men and for being absent himself from training."
Vol 1, p 233 - "At the court of assistants held at Cambridge the 5th day
of the 4th month 1638, Lawrence Waters wife was enjoined to give John Finch 18d
and Nice Theale to give John Finch 18d and Edward Lamb to give him 2s and Lamb
was fined 15s, 6d for his contempt and all of them were admonished to avoid dancing.

4 acres 26 Feb 1636 p 13 - John Finch granted another 4 acres 26 Jun 1637 p 18
- John Finch drew the first lot and received 91 acres 10 May 1642
This places him in Watertown in 1642. In October 1642 he was assigned 6 acres
of marsh and upland "like the other men" in Stamford. He was on the
lists of the Stamford Colony for the first three years.
8 Nov 1647 - court action, Daniel Mitchell vs John Finch. 1647 - David Mitchell
sued John Finch for debt. 13 Feb 1648/9 - Jeffrey Ferris sued John Finch. 1652
- Sold land to William Potts (Potter). 27 Jan 1684/5 - W. Potter, age 75 or therabouts
testified that he got the land which Daniel Scofield now lives upon of Goodman
Finch which was Isaac and Samuel Finch's father. 1652 - Received house and lot
from Henry Ackerly of Stamford. 1653 - Sold his house and lot to Richard Ambler.
The lands of John Finch (Stamford) were described under date of March 1, 1650..
"This house and lot with the ten acres following sold to Richard Ambler."
The deed given by Finch, signed Nov 15, 1652, and specified that Finch to have
the use of the house to Nov. 15, 1653. Deed was recorded 10 Nov 1653.
John Finch died 5 Sep 1657, in Stamford. The inventory of his estate filed in
Stamford bears the date 9th, 12th mo. 1658. His widow, Martha, married as her
second husband Sept 1658 John Green.
