bullet Clarence PARVIN(284) was born on 21 Jul 1750 in Cumberland Cty., NJ. He died on 10 Feb 1788. Clarence acchieved lasting fame by being one of the participants in the Greenwich (NJ) tea burning action in 1774. The story is a historic event in Revolutionary history. The event was one of the first overt acts against the British in the Philadelphia area. It is recounted here:

The First Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia in 1774, had approved defiance of the British tea tax and set up a Continental Association that was to end all imports from Britain on December 1, 1774.

First to resort to violence in support of the plan was a group of forty young men, including 24-year old Clarence Parvin, in the Cohansey River town of Greenwich, the port of entry for the colony of West Jersey.

On December 12, the British brigantine Greyhound arrived at the town warf after the captain was told in Philadelphia that she could not be unloaded there. Greenwich port authorities allowed the British crew to come ashore, but refused to permit them to unload the tea.

After three days in port, surveillance of the crew members relaxed sufficiently so that on December 15 they were able, with the aid of Loyalists and the darkness of the night, to steal ashore with the tea chests and hide them on the property of Daniel Bowen, a local Tory.

There the tea was padlocked for eventual delivery to Crown agents at its Philadelphia destination. But youthful Greenwich rebels discovered the deception. Dressed as Indians in the manner of the patriots who had participated in the Boston Tea Party a year earlier, they broke into the Bowen storehouse, carried the tea across the Great Street to Market Square and warmed themselves before a widely witnessed fire.

Although Colonial courts were Crown-controlled in those days, Greenwich authorities were unable to recruit a jury that would convict the arsonists, who went free.

In addition to young Parvin, the enterprising group included Richard Howell, who became governer of New Jersey; Dr. Thomas Ewing, who became surgeon in the Continental Army, and the Rev. Philip Vickers Fithian, who became a minister, missionary, and army chaplain.

Today a monuments stands in the peaceful Colonial town of Greenwich, NJ, with the names of its Tea Burning patriot heroes, among them Clarence Parvin. Parents: Silas PARVIN and Lydia JONES.
