This view shows the configuration in the Vietnam War when I was aboard.
The round radar antenna was the radar I was assigned to, AN/SPS-30.

Commissioned as the world's largest aircraft carrier in September 1945, MIDWAY was homeported in Alameda, California while Conrad was aboard from 1963 through January1966. At that time the Midway was decommissioned for a FRAM in Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, CA. Conrad was transferred across the pier to the sister ship, The Coral Sea, CVA 43. Conrad was aboard the Coral Sea for 4 months.

Midway Overhead
Official U. S. Navy photograph

Good overhead showing stern of Midway after her 1970 overhaul which added the 3 large elevators, one on each side of the island and one on the edge of the starboard angle deck. F4's and A4's are shown on the flight deck.

The Midway later was homeported at Yokosuka, Japan beginning in October 1973. After her final deployment with Carrier Air Wing 5, she was decommissioned 11 April 1992, and remains inactivated in reserve status at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. It is planned to move the Midway to San Diego, CA for use as a Museum and Memorial.
